Summer's Here... IDK What To Wear, Said Me Never
It comes to zero surprise to anyone, coming from a girl whose walls are lined with clothing racks, overflowing with clothes. So many people ask me where I shop, and what capsule I'm pulling for the summer, but the truth is, I haven't shopped for clothing in over a year. I can proudly say the last time I purchased an item of clothing was in 2022, and it was a chocolate brown leather Chloe vest from The Real Real.
That's a big feat for someone who regularly peruses FRWD, Net-A-Porter, and Revolve on a regular basis. Yes, I'M LOOKING, to keep up to date on all things trendy, but mostly, for myself, I try to stay away from harrowing trends. Sure, I have my fair share of unique one-offs, like the pink pastel pair of low-rise Versace pants that I think I've only managed to wear once. It's not a testament to how many clothes I have, but moreso, a testament to how difficult it is to style them.
Of course, Sofia Richie's soft-girl implosion sparked fires across social media platforms screaming 'Quiet Luxury,' 'Old Money' and 'Generational Wealth.' Alright, now that we've gotten all of the buzzwords out of the way, let's circle back. The reason I haven't shopped in a year is that when I was shopping, I was shopping for simple basics, always opting for the silk slip dress from Nili Lotan, one of my favorites, or, the stunning Chloe vest I mentioned above. I like wearing funky things just like the next girl, but I really feel that working in an English-cast environment -- my last in-person job at the beloved snarky online mag, I've been able to reach new heights in my own style. It's chic, understated, and it looks expensive. Not all of it is, which is the key. I've been a fan of the high-low dressing since I got my hands on a Vogue and couldn't afford anything in sight. Well, of course, I've managed to create my own clothes and style them to my own perfection. The thing is, looking at my apartment chock-full of clothes I once loved, now, I look at them and kind of hate it all.
I'd be lying if I said it didn't take a year and a half to break in those Ganni boots I wear on a day-to-day basis. It's like, as soon as I broke them in, boom, it's summer, time for Miu Miu flats and flowy dresses. Whatever. I'm biased against summer dresses because they always look cheap and sweaty. Yes, I swear, some of the cute little dresses you see hanging in window-fronts of SoHo are darling, but me, personally? Hate them.
All of that being said, my projects are starting to bubble up and take off, which means, I need styling, I need a new wardrobe, and one that will look good on camera, sans the added five pounds.
